Dispelling Rumors

Hello all,

Sorry to take up your time, but apparently there is a rumor afloat at least in this great little town of Newport that our wedding is an open invitation to the entire community. If you should hear this from some poor slob please make a correction to the misinformed! We are big enough and only dear family, friends and their guests were invited.

Thanks for your understanding.

Terry and Andrew

Here is some latest skinny from Nye Beach in advance of the big wedding shindig. Here you will find info on weather, potluck, wedding itinerary and errata.

Weather.
Be advised to dress appropriately for summer at the Oregon Coast. This can mean chilly winds and highs in the 50s. Think fleece, windbreaker and hat. It is generally 20 degrees colder at the Pacific than it is in the Valley, and likely more extreme of a difference if you are coming from afar. We want you all to be comfortable, peeps.

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=zmw:97365.1.99999
is a good link for weather forecast. I think Wunderground is a thinly veiled homage to the Weather Underground, itself an homage to a Dylan song. But i digress.
http://cil-www.oce.orst.edu/yhead/latest.c0.snap.jpg
is a webcam at Yaquina Head near the lighthouse, looking south at Newport, whereas
http://www.tripcheck.com/roadcams/cams/YaquinaBayJetty_pid645.jpg
is a cam atop the Yaquina Bay Bridge, looking west at the ocean. I like this one because it also gives the temp and windspeed, and is updated more frequently. When there is a heavy surf advisory, you can see a good waves being surfed from this cam as well. Not likely in the summer time.

Potluck/Food
Terry and i are providing albacore, champagne and wedding cake and some appetizers.

The albacore is an extremely clean fishery. Line-caught by hardworking local fisherfolk, who prove their mettle by occasionally sinking and feeding the aquatic food chain.

The champagne is top shelf, and the wedding cake will be handcrafted by Lori at Cafe Mundo, low glycemic, organic and eco-groovy on too many levels to mention.

Yes, the rest is up to you, dear attendees. This is a potluck. Bring a dish and keep it healthy. Be creative! Be not vexed by this ritual. For those who cannot travel with a dish from afar, there are scads of grocery stores nearby that offer up decent food to go. The Fred Meyers at the north end of town on 101 has a decent health food ghetto, and deli etc. For the full organic monty, there is Oceana Coop a few blocks SE from the intersection of Hwy 101 and 20. Also, on the Saturday prior to the big shindig, there is a way cool farmers market near City Hall.

Down on the Bayfront, there is fresh seafood to be had straight off the boat, and there is a great sushi restaurant, Sada's near Ripley's Believe it or Not at Mariner's square for take out platters, as well as the acclaimed Local Ocean restaurant at the east end of the strip, not to mention a wonderful Noodle Cafe at the west end. There is a decent Thai joint across the street from Noodles, and Sharks seafood, which features stream cooked seafood and an overbearing owner.

Libations
One of the reasons Cafe Mundo is so affordable to us is the no host bar. That means you pay a bartender. Mundo offers great beer pints, wines and a creative cocktail menu. If you are sipping on your own, please be discrete.

Wedding schedule in broad strokes at Cafe Mundo
4pm. Come and mingle.
5 - ceremony and post mingling
6 - dinner!
7 - cutting of the cake, toasts
Bands play 7-9, perhaps longer

Approx 10 - down to the beach, at the Nye Beach Turn around. for a bonfire and old-school beach party with music. This is a few blocks downhill from Cafe Mundo. Dress appropriately. Locals, bring firewood to throw on the pile!

Other Wedding Q&As

Gifts?
We don't need more store bought stuff, tho exemptions for handcrafted or artsy is A-OK, or donations to our honeymoon fund. If not, just your presence is present enough.

Ritual?
The ceremony will be a cultural mashup.

Wedding rings?
Not wanting to support the evil extractive mining industry, Terry and Andrew have scoured the yard-sales, estate sales and pawn shops and came up with some tasteful rings that are second hand, or fingered.  Terry's engagement ring is a Rodman family heirloom, from Andrew's late grandmother Edith.

Does this mean you are settling down finally?
Terry and I will continue to maintain our original homes in N. Portland and Newport. Of the bouncing back and forth, and work travels et el, we foresee no change in lifestyle.

Rodman, normally you are the go-to person for freaky wedding toasts. Are you going to toast yourself and Terry?

There will be toast opportunity for celebrants, a kind of open mic, after the cutting of the cake. Be brief and punchy!

What do i do in Newport?
Newport is interpretive center happy. For lighthouse buffs, there is a lighthouse interpretive center on Yaquina Head. My housemate Ernie stars as the lighthouse keeper in one of the film loops. At the actual lighthouse, overlooking the excellent seabird rookery there is a reproduction of a journal, showing a cross dressing lighthouse keeper.

On the way out there you will find a ADA compliant Tidepool Interpretive walk (to upper area of which you can view the surfers at Agate, which is where i surf). For maritime buffs, the newly opened Maritime Museum on the Bayfront is cool. For interested hikers the Mike Miller Interpretive Trail, in South Beach (directly east of Grey's Bargain Yard) is a great loop thru coastal forest zones. Also in S. Beach is the Oregon Coast Aquarium (about $15) and next door, for donation entry is the interactive Hatfield Marine Science Center Public Wing, outside of which there is a nice estuary walk interpretive trail.

If you want to get way from interpretive areas, the beach is a nice long walk from the N. Jetty at the South end of town (actually the N. Jetty) to Yaquina Head to the North. At the S. Beach Jetty, the access road is worth a trip to see up close boats coming in an out of the bar in the Pacific. There are paved and "primitive" trails at S. Jetty State Park. Safety Tip. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Newport has a working Bay front. This means there are legions of fish gut dripping forklifts weaving in an out of the tourist melee. The historic Bayhaven Tavern, and the Barge Inn are drenched in local color. This the 3rd largest deep sea port in the Oregon and hosts the largest fishing fleet in the NW. The non-denominational Fisherman's Memorial is atop the Yaquina Bay State Park attests to the body count, and there is also a great view of the N. Jetty, and down the stairs thru the woods, access to the a great state park near at the N. Jetty. If you want to get oriented on the doings of Newport, this is a decent site

Food:
Cafe Mundo will be open for normal biz Fri and Sat prior to the Wedding. They offer "world beat cuisine," and feature live local music no cover. On Sat, world acclaimed visual artist Rick Bartow fronts his Americana blues band The Backseat Drivers. Across the street from Mundo is an excellent bakery/pizzaria Paninis,  the owner of which just opened a wood-fired pizza joint on the bay front. Down the hill from Mundo a few blocks from the Nye Beach Turnaround, is the Nye Beach Market Deli, which has arguably the best breakfast and lunch in town. Clam Chowder? Stop asking about clam chowder!  Nine miles east up the bay front is a great Oyster Farm.

The area
Way north of Newport and bit north of Lincoln City, Cascade Head is an excellent hike. Lincoln City has Devils Lake and boast the world's shortest river, the D river, so short they couldn't get all the  Devil in there. Depoe bay has the world's smallest harbor and other Devils include Devil's Punchbowl at Otter Rock, and Devil's Churn south of Yachats. Get your Devil out.

Signed Andrew and Terry, newly conjoined.

Planning a wedding has proven to be slightly more complicated than one of our Thanksgiving gatherings. This is like a soft version of a serious campaign. Ever since announcing the date at around the time of the failed Mayan doomsday, there has been this crazed outpouring of support from all corners.

The first milestone was getting the date (Sunday, Aug 4) to hold the wedding at Cafe Mundo.
http://www.cafemundo.us/

Thru the fog and the murk of ages, Mundo has served as the throbbing community heart of the alt crowd, (as opposed to the bucktoothed bowlegged crowd of Newport) in Nye Beach. It has been a hub of too many happenings to catalog in my time in Newport.

This is also where I met Terry almost three years ago, during a classic Mundo combo of community theater in the round followed by open mic. That night i did my usual SPUII (Spoken Word Under the Influence), of a piece i was writing while carrying on a conversation with this intriguing gal. Terry, likewise interested, tells me this sealed the deal.

So really folks, where else could we hold this gathering?

Yep, Mundo has an eclectic legacy and an impressively talented core of supporters, offering up music, dance, performance, gathering space and creative commons.

Over the years of back and forth between Portland and Newport, Terry has been delighted that the Nye beach community has embraced her as well.

For my part, I have always had a Portland predisposition, that i carried with by moving to Newport. It is cool that I have a second home in the Rose City (for the first time since 1994.)

At the beach, the tide flushes in and out. Logs roll, ships go down, and seabirds careen. Climbing the lighthouse to send shadow plays over the dark waters, the word went out, and the response has been great.

Flowers? Melinda of the venerable "beav-siege" sauna is growing them special. Fish? Local tuna has been promised at wholesale, Rachel has offered to kick in for a food donation.

An officiator? After some surreal rounds on searching for a fisher poet sea captain to preside, we have landed on a white-water captain Ralph, our favorite jack-mormon with a Church of Universal Life (box top authorized) accreditation. Heck, any fisherman worth his salt will be offshore that day anyway, but at least Ralph has already RSVP'd.

There are a few other surprises in hand, and i don't want to be a spoiler, so I'll spare your more previews of coming attractions.

Potluck Considerations
We realize the difficulty for some of the attendees who are traveling and don't have access to a kitchen or refrigeration, so we are asking locals to triple their recipes. We will come up with a plan to coordinate the potluck. Honestly. Stay tuna for more details.

Planning this has been a bit of a welcome respite to dwelling on the screaming madness of our times. What does us better as a community, than to come together to celebrate? Shit dang, its always worked for me. So much planning has been plowed into this day, that it seems bizarre that friends and family will pop up simultaneously, and then--boop--dissipate back to their various lives. Hosting hosting genes ourselves, we are delighted that so many of you are going to be attending, but can already see we won't have time to hang with so many of you.

Greetings friends and family.

Summer may just be a rumor away, yet there are wedding plans afoot.

Please make plans to join us Sunday, Aug 4, 2013, at the edge of the Western World, Central Oregon Coast, Newport, Ore. to celebrate the union of Andrew Rodman and Terry Waldron.

Venue:

Cafe Mundo: 209 NW Coast St Newport, OR 97365

(541) 574-8134

Approx time 3-9pm. Knot tying at 4.

Why Mundo?:

This the community hub of Nye Beach, just barely out of the Tsunami inundation zone. An outdoor-indoor venue, with wooded courtyard, outdoor stage and fire pits, it is way cool. This is also where we met, at an open mic reading, natch! Mundo is a short walk to two beach accesses. Great Feng Shui

Feasting:

The hosts (T&A) will provide BBQ albacore, (line caught, in season). However, this is a potluck event. There will be many attendees. So bring a dish to share. Details on food coordination pending. Keep it fresh and healthy. Check the blog later for potluck sign-up sheet. We have not gotten this far yet.

Libations:

No Host Bar at Mundo. There will be beer, wine and cocktails for purchase from smiling Mundo servers. Some bubbly will be provided.

Gift registry:

Nope

Theme:

Nautical

Directions.

Come on people, get your device out and figure this out for yourselves.

From South:

Corvallis Exit from 1-5, Hwy 34 becomes Hwy 20 at west end of Philomath. 47 miles to Newport. This takes you to downtown Newport.

If you take this option FM 100.7 changes from KBOO Portland to Newport's classic rock station BOSS FM.

Bus: Casino bus Chinook Winds. Local bus from there

Boat: 44.6369° N, 124.0522° W

Weather:

Who knows: but a good guess is found here:

The hotter inland, the cooler it tends to be at the coast. Normally there is a north wind that cools thing down. Dress appropriately.

Accommodations:

Many of you have crashed at Andrew's cottage on Cottage st., you know how small the house and yard is. Understandably, there are backup plans for the mad horde.

This being a tourist town, there are motels and hotels too numerous to detail, ranging from inexpensive on Hwy 101 to more expensive ones with ocean views.

The Newport Chamber of Commerce has the skinny on much of this

and if you are traveling by RV, you can dump your black water there. Heh.

Many friends and family recommend the dog friendly:

Whaler Motel:
155 SW Elizabeth Street
Newport, Oregon 97365
(541) 265-9261
info@whalernewport.com

10% discount if you mention the Terry and Andrew's wedding.

Campgrounds:

Beverly Beach State Park is a few miles to the north

South Beach State Park a few miles to the south

800.452.5687 reservations.

Summer is a busy time for reservations, so if you want a yurt especially, jump on it!

Activities:

One downside of having everyone come to visit at once, is that lack of personal time and attention we can devote to each of you. So many of you will have to fend for yourselves for outings. Luckily, there are long beach walks, nearby forests, tide pools, interpretive centers, a working bay front, charter boats and the like.

The Newport Aquarium is pretty decent, and the interpretive wing of the Marine Science Center is worth a visit. We even have some vintage 70s attractions at Mariner Square such as Undersea Gardens, Ripley's Believe It or Not, and The Wax Works. For lighthouse fanatics, we have two: Yaquina Head with its awesome seabird rookery just offshore, and Yaquina Bay lighthouse, decommissioned, and reportedly haunted.

If you are an oyster fan, Yaquina Bay Oyster Farm is a few miles up river.

Beach bonfires are definitely an option.

We will be sending updates to this blog as details emerge.

Questions, contact Terry at castrataro6@yahoo.com, or Andrew at rodman@teleport.com.

Hope to see you there!
